How we can control drowsiness?



Drowsiness has a many reason, even we have a complete sleep we still feel drowsiness, one reason is a habit, like sleeping in the mid-noon, this is one cause of drowsiness, that's why our trainer told us not to sleep in the mid-noon  and there is also a habit that after eating we feel drowsiness. And so on.

 

By the way what is drowsiness?

 

Drowsiness is a feeling abnormally sleepy during the day; People who are drowsy may fall asleep in inappropriate situations or at inappropriate times.

It is also the natural response to the body's need for sleep. Many other factors, such as eating a heavy meal, being bored, or sitting in a warm room, provoke feelings of drowsiness. A person may also experience increased drowsiness during a mild illness, such as a cold or the flu. All of these are natural responses. However, persistent unexplained drowsiness may be associated with a serious illness like obesity and diabetes.

 

What the possible cause of drowsiness?

 

  • Chronic pain Diabetes

  • Having to work long hours or different shifts (nights, weekends)

  • Medications (tranquilizers, sleeping pills, antihistamines) Hyponatremia /hypernatremia

  • Not sleeping for long enough

  • Sleep disorders (such as sleep apnea syndrome and narcolepsy)

  • Too much calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia)

  • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

 Effect of drowsiness.

 

  • Drowsiness may limit your ability to work, like driving a car and operate machinery safely.

  • Drowsiness might cause an accident.

  • You often forget things and task that you must do.

  • Lack of sleep can hinder you from thinking clearly and keeping your emotions at an even keel. Studies show that excessive sleepiness can hurt work performance, wreak havoc on relationships, and lead to mood problems like anger and depression.

 

Here are several known causes of drowsiness. From life choices and mental states.

 

Life Choices

 

  • Certain life choices, such as working very long hours or switching to a night shift. Of course your body system changed but after this change your body will adopt it.

 

Mental State or psychological, state.

 

  • Like depression that can greatly increase drowsiness, as can high levels of anxiety or stress.

  • Boredom is another known cause of drowsiness. If your drowsiness is caused by these conditions, you are also likely to be fatigued and suffer from apathy.

  • Medical Conditions, The most common is diabetes. Other conditions that may lead to drowsiness include those that cause chronic pain or affect your metabolism, such as hyponatremia. An underactive thyroid may also make you feel drowsy.

  • Medications, particularly antihistamines, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills, is possible effect of drowsiness

 

Sleeping Disorder

 

  • Like, Sleep apnea is a disorder where a blockage in your upper airways creates pauses in your breathing throughout the night, causing you to wake up frequently with a choking sound. Other sleep disorders include narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and delayed sleep phase disorder.

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness because of Depression, anxiety, stress, boredom and fatigue may be a sign of a significant sleep disorder.

 

How the drowsiness is treated, Treatment will depend on the cause of it.

 

There is two kind of treatment

 

Self treatment

 

  • Self treatment it is cause by life choice, like if is because by working at night ship.

  • Drowsiness goes away naturally as your body becomes used to a new schedule or as you become less stressed, depressed, or anxious.

  • If you’re working at night ship, try to sleep in the day at least 6 hour before your working time.

  • Eating too much could be sometime a causes of drowsiness, also if you are hungry it also causes of drowsiness, so, eat right or on balance.

  • Take plenty of rest, investigate the cause if it is stress or fatigue and take appropriate action.

 

In medical treatment

 

  • Medical treatment if is in serious condition like sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and others.

  • Go to your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any changes in your mood, signs of depression, or uncontrollable feelings of stress and anxiety.

  • Use sleeping pills to complete your sleep at night that causes your drowsiness in inappropriate situation, like in working hours.

  • For drowsiness due to medications, talk to your health care provider about switching or stopping your medications. Never stop

  • Blood test may be done to treat your drowsiness.

  • Blood tests (such as a CBC and blood differential, blood sugar level, electrolytes, and thyroid hormone levels) CT scan of the head EEG Sleep studies Urine tests (such as a urinalysis)

Drowsiness can be a serious problem; we should not let it happen.

 

How Can Drowsiness Be Prevented?

 

  • Often, a regular amount of sleep each night can prevent drowsiness.

  • Most adults require about eight hours of sleep to feel fully refreshed.

  • Some people may need more, especially those with medical conditions or a particularly active lifestyle.

  • Take care of your body don’t spend your rest time for another work.

  • Have a family hour, a family day that all of you will spend together for vacation.

  • Pray it clear our mind from all the problem and anxiety, seek God faithfulness and resting place.
